Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 battery life

Although the battery for the Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2
is non rechargeable (and it isn't cheap either),
it has pretty good battery life.
It's much better than is stated in the specs.
But I hardly ever use ETTL,
and I use my two 550EX speedlites in manual mode most of the time.
