On January 13, 1996, the first Emotion Festival took place at Nakano Zero Hall. Matsumoto Rica and Sekiya Kazutaka were the emcees.

The event flowed as follows.

  • introduction, and talk with some guests
  • Fam & Ihrlie 4 (accompanied by live orchestra)
  • Emotion talk with some guests
  • Bandai character/OAV poll
  • Gundam
  • presents

In the morning, prior to this event, they had a showing of various OAVs and such: Taiho Shichauzo 4, Macross Plus 4, Gundam Wing 1, Slayers TV 1.

introduction, and talk with some guests

The first two guests to appear were Tamagawa Sakiko and Yamaguchi Kappei. They talked very shortly about the current things that they were working on (CDs and such).

Also during this event, Tamagawa Sakiko was doing the PA system announcements.

Fam & Ihrlie 4 (accompanied by live orchestra)

They showed Fam & Ihrlie episode 4, but instead of the normal BGM, they had a 6 person orchestra, directed by Amano Masamichi. During the OAV, this orchestra performed some of the BGM live. Then at the end of the episode, Matsumoto Rica came and sang the ED song live!

[Since I had not seen Fam & Ihrlie 2 and 3, I had no idea what was going on.. (;_;)]

Then they called Amano Masamichi and talked with him for a while. He said that it would be great if they can do another OAV showing like this, but with a bigger orchestra, and a full seiyuu cast to do the voices live.

Then they called Mori Takeshi (the director) and talked with him for a while.

Emotion talk with some guests

After a 10 minute break, they showed a 20 minute video showing the history of Emotion. It contained clips from the various movies, TV shows, and OAVs that Emotion released from 1982 to 1996.

Then they called four of the Bandai producers (Takanashi Minoru, Sugita ??, Matsumoto ??, and Ikeguchi Kazuhiko) to the stage. They talked about some of the old anime that they worked on, and some of the new anime that will be coming out.

Some of the old anime that these people had worked on were: Mr. Takanashi - Macross 7; Mr. Sugita - SD Gundam; Mr. Matsumoto - Beat Shot; and Mr. Ikeguchi - Madara, Villgust, Fam & Ihrlie.

They showed some clips of Mahou Tsukaitai and Shamanic Princess, which were new OAVs coming out later this year. Mahou Tsukaitai was a very cute, funny, and slightly ecchi magical girl story. Itou Ikuko and Satou Jun'ichi (Sailor Moon) are working on this OAV. Mr. Takanashi stressed that ecchi was very different from sukebe. (^_^;) The main voice actresses for Mahou Tsukaitai were Konishi Hiroko, Iwao Junko, and Iizuka Mayumi.

Shamanic Princess is also a magical girl story, but it is much darker in mood. The character design for this will be done by Ishida Atsuko (Magic Knight Rayearth). Matsumoto Rica will be doing a voice in Shamanic Princess.

Then Mr. Sugita let out a secret that there will be a Tetsuwan Birdy anime coming out later this year. Tetsuwan Birdy is by Yuuki Masami (Pat Labor). One of the voices will be done by Hyoudou Mako, and Mako appeared as a guest for a little while. Other seiyuu in this anime will be Mitsuishi Kotono and Iwanaga Tetsuya.

The Playstation Macross game (due out later this year) will have six types of transforming Valkyries. The OP for the game will be a Fire Bomber song, and the ED will be written by Iijima Mari, but sung by someone else. Also they might do a Sega Saturn version of the Macross game too, but they haven't decided for sure yet.

Then they had the group Rururu come to sing a song. Rururu is a new group made up of Tezuka Chiharu, Fujino Kaoru, and Morota Kaoru, whose names all end in "ru". They sing the ED song to the TV show Say You Club, but the song that they sang was the coupling song from the CD single.

Bandai character/OAV poll

Then they moved onto the presentation of the results of the Bandai character/OAV poll. They counted down the top 10 for the male TV characters, female TV characters, male OAV characters, female OAV characters, TV shows, and OAVs.

Also the voice actress Kujira came onto the stage as a guest to talk for a little bit.

Gundam

They showed a video of some clips from the Gundam version 2.0 Playstation game. This looks much better than the first Gundam game, which was a disappointment.

Then they showed Gundam Dai 08 MS Shoutai episode 2. They showed episode 2 instead of episode 1 because episode 1 had been given away in Newtype magazine, and many people had already seen it. The first LD/video will come with both episodes 1 and 2.

[This Gundam looks very nice.. although the screen was blurry. I'm not sure if it's my eyes or the projection system. (^_^;)]

presents

They had a question corner where the whole crowd participated to determine who was the King of Emotion. It was a series of yes/no questions regarding Emotion related anime. The winner got to choose one of anything that Emotion will release in 1996, including LDs, videos, and LD box sets.

After that they read out the winning numbers for the grab bag of Emotion goodies, videos, games, cels, etc. (Each person who attended the event had numbers written on the tickets.)
